Region Print Page

What is Region?

A region is an area that is defined by certain similar characteristics. Those unifying or similar characteristics can be physical, natural, human, or cultural.


Activity for Region

The United States is grouped into 5 regions. These regions are grouped by history, traditions, economy, climate, and/or geography. 


  1. On a blank map of the United States (see resouces below) divide and label the 5 U.S. regions.
  2. Write an essay answering the following questions: Why do you think the U.S. is divided like it is - discuss each region separately. How do regional definitions help us organize and understand the country and the world? How do they contribute to stereotypes?              OR
  3. Capture the essence, spirit and character of one U.S. region in poem form. Remember to use descriptive adjectives that help paint a vivid picture of your region. Use the pattern below to write your poem.

Line 1   City/Country Name/Region

Line 2   Four physical features that descibe the region

Line 3   Three cultural features

Line 4   Neighbor of/bordering location

Line 5   Climate (temperature, precipitation,etc) description

Line 6   Three items that give this place character

Line 7   Three events that shaped this place (historical, human interaction)

Line 8  Two problems or issues of current importance

Line 9   Country/Region
