Greek Gods Research Project

For this project, you will need to focus on identifying ONE Greek gods who appears in The Iliad for your research. You will use only the text of The Iliad as your primary source. The purpose of this is to closely study the primary text, so no outside sources should be used.

Once you have decided on which of the gods from The Iliad will be your focus, you will need to complete the following for each one in your own hand-written notes/work.

Create a separate section for each of the following parts.


1. Pre-reading. Write 2-3 paragraphs explaining all of the prior knowledge you had about the god, before you actually read about your god in The Iliad. Also express why you have particular interest in learning more about this particular god. You might additionally address what you expect to find in your research.


2. Reading. As you locate and read the sections of the text about your god you will need to interact with the text.  You will interact using the Critical Reading strategies of marking and charting the text. If you have a school copy of the book, you will need to use the attached Cornell notes for an adapted version of marking and charting the text. You will need to demonstrate that you have completed a,b, and c for at least five pages of Iliad text.

            a. Marking the text-

1. Number the paragraphs (minimum one page of text).

2. Read the selection once without doing anything.

3. Read the selection again and circle key descriptive words about your god.

4. Underline main ideas.

5. Pause and Connect ideas that are related.

            b. Charting the text-

1. Chart the text first by recording what the author is “saying” in the left hand column of the chart.

2. Next, record what the author is “doing” in the right hand column of the chart. Use the “charting verbs” for assistance.

            c. Summarizing- At the bottom of the text charting, write a 2-4 sentence summary of

the information you discovered about the god.

3. Processing. After you read, you will process the text by addressing the following questions in Cornell note format. If a question isn’t answered directly by the text, think about what can be inferred from your reading.

a. What is the story of the character’s birth/origin? Include a drawing of a family tree that extends at least two levels in both directions (parentage/offspring). You may need to consult outside sources for this section ONLY.

b. What are the defining characteristics of the god? (strengths, interests, motivation, situation, personality)

              c. What important roles has this god played in the Iliad?

d. What symbolic meaning does the character have to the humans in the story (the Greeks)?  What role has the character played in the explanation of any natural forces?

4. Applying. After you have processed the text, answer the following questions in Cornell notes format for your character.

a. In what ways have elements of this mythical character survived through the ages to be applicable to our modern culture? How have modern depictions altered or held true to the original intent of the character?

b. What characters from other cultural stories outside of Greece are similar to the god you researched? In which ways? What does this say about the universal meaning behind your god.

5. Presenting.  Create the following:

a. Create a depiction of your character in the form of Greek pottery, either on a “plate,” “urn,” or “vase.” The colors should remain in two-tone “clay” and “black.” This should just be a flat piece of paper cut into the appropriate shape, no larger than 8 ½ by 11 inches. This should be your own artistic rendition of the character, not someone else’s.

b. Mount your pottery on a poster paper provided by the teacher which include the character’s name in large letters (can be read from relatively far away), a bio/description of the character, and the best highlights (bullet points) from your reading/notes. This information should not come from other sources, only from your close reading of The Iliad.


             Making it Culturally Relevant to YOU! Choose one of the following activities to include in your presentation!

               a. My Family's Honor Code: Honor codes were very important to the Greeks. Draft a decree of your family's "honor code." What are the morals that your family personally values? 

               b. My Culture Family Tree: Create a family tree for your family. The family tree should contain any relevant birth/death dates, countries/states of origin and extend as far back as you can go.

               c. The Epic Poem of My Family: Write a page or two in the "epic poem style" depicting the story of you family. Consider the Greek style used in The Iliad.

You will present your posters in small groups on the due date JANUARY 23rd .
