Goals Essay Description
In this paper, you will tell me about some of the goals you have set for your life. You will talk about who you would like to become, what you would like to achieve in school and beyond, what career you are guiding yourself toward, and what you would like to be known for. In addition, you will write about what you have already achieved or what you are engaged in, as well as what you plan to do that will help turn your goals into realities. While at least some of your goals may be shared by others, the way in which you present them in this paper will be unique to you.
Your audience for this writing is your teacher-- me. In your writing, discuss and explain your academic, professional, and/or personal goals. Include an explanation of past and present endeavors that have already had an impact on your attainment of these goals, and identify your plan for continuing to work toward your goals this school year. Remember that goals should follow the S-M-A-R-T model. What is that?
S- pecific. For example, it does someone no good to say they want to just lose weight. It is not specific enough. To be a SMART goal, the person would have specifically say how much weight he wants to lose. 10 pounds? 20 pounds? Be specific.
M-easurable. Your goal needs to be measurable. How will you know when you have accomplished it? If your goal is to take better notes, then maybe you should decide what that means. You might say, “I am going to take 100 pages of notes each day.” That is measurable.
A- ttainable. This means that your goal needs to be something that you are able to accomplish in a reasonable time frame. You may be able to reach your goal by accomplishing steps along the way. You have to be able to identify what those steps are and set goals to accomplish the sub goals first. For example, if you want to own your own business, you must first set a goal to graduate high school eligible for college. Then you can set a goal to graduate college with a business degree. Then you can set a goal to get an internship in a business… and so on. Think BABY STEPS. Otherwise, it’s just a dream.
R- ealistic. This means you have to actually be able to attain/accomplish your goal. You can’t say something like, I want to eat all of the planets for dinner. First of all, that would go against your goal to lose weight, but how are ever going to be able to do that? So, a goal like, I want to play center for the Lakers, may not be realistic enough to attain if you are 4’5” and missing a leg.
T-imely. A goal should be grounded within a time-frame. Give yourself a deadline! Do you want to be the 95 year old who is just now graduating from college? Just look at the poster on the wall by the door and you’ll know what I’m talking about. Sure, she accomplished her goal, but geeze! 73 years of college is a bit much!

II. Part 2 (3 short paragraphs, one for each SMART goal)- How will you turn your goals into reality? Discuss your plan for at least three specific SMART goals that relate to your career (50% of your paper). Use the charts for SMART goals to help you determine the details you might choose to write about.
