Inclusive Practices Philosophy
It is the intent of Mesa Public Schools to provide an appropriate education for students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment (LRE). The purpose of this post is to foster conversation about access and the least restrictive environment for students with disabilities, a conversation that should be driven by multiple forms of collaboration. The intent is to emphasize how shared understandings are essential for creating effective schools, including a deep understanding of what inclusive schooling involves and how educators must partner to accomplish this goal. Inclusive practices are addressed as a powerful means for ensuring that students receive both access to curriculum and the supports they need to learn there. In addition, practical dilemmas that arise (for example, scheduling, personnel matters) will be discussed and solutions proposed.
No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA), have led to a renewed interest in providing students meaningful access to general education. More than ever before, efforts to reach this goal are fueled by the expectation that school professionals can and should succeed in significantly raising the achievement of students with disabilities.
Thank you for being an instrument of change in Mesa Public Schools. Your implementation of Inclusive Practices positively effects students, families, school climate and the educational community.
